On June 17th, 2026 an intense late-season storm system spawned an outbreak of severe storms and tornadoes across central and southern Illinois. This was a really long day of observing storms and covering the severe weather event for local media as a morning round of storms producing damaging winds and a few tornadoes left a boundary across the area. This region modified in the June sun during the afternoon, and a second round of supercells producing significant severe weather, including a few strong tornadoes that unfortunately impacted populated areas in Mattoon-Charleston and Effingham in central and southern Illinois. Yet another wild day of tornadoes in the home state!
