Scenes From a Birthday Tornado Chase | April 27, 2026
Monday, Apri 27th was my 39th birthday, and for the third straight year I was able to spend my birthday chasing tornadoes. I've seen tornadoes on April 26th and April 28th in past years, but never on my actual birthday. Looks like I'll have to keep waiting... tough chase on Monday with rainy, electric storms that grew upscale into fast-moving lines across central and southern Illinois. Lots of wind damage, a couple brief tornadoes within the line, and another birthday well spent. Looks like we'll take a break from severe storms across the Midwest for a week or so. I could use a breather, but I'll be ready to go again in early May!

Chasing the April 17th, 2026 Tornado Outbreak | Vlog #78
SKYDRAMA.NET | On Friday, April 17th, 2026 an outbreak of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes occured across the Midwest and Central Plains. Colin Davis and I were together for our first chase of the year this time, targeting the Illinois/Wisconsin border. What unfolded was 6 hours of multiple supercells and at least six tornadoes from Galena to Lena to Harrison - Rockton in Illinois to Avalon, Delavan, and Honey Lake in Wisconsin. If you’re not a supporting channel member yet, join now for exclusive content including forecast updates before the chase! Looks like more severe weather on the horizon!

Chasing a Supercell Through Madison, WI (& Rockford IL!) | April 14th, 2026 | VLOG #77
SKYDRAMA.NET | On Tuesday, April 14th, 2026 an outbreak of supercells producing large hail and a few tornadoes occurred across portions of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois, with additional severe storms into the Central and Southern Plains. I chased this day with my buddy Alex Hall who works as a producer now at Fox weather - we've been friends for over 10 years now bonded over our love for the Chicago Cubs and severe weather. He lives and works out in New York now, so it's always nice to get him back in the Midwest for a proper storm chase. We documented a big tornado warned supercell that tracked through the Madison, Wisconsin metro with hail to baseball size. We bailed west as the storm moved into Milwaukee and picked off another tornado warned storm west of Madison. We spent the next couple hours dropping south down Interstate 39 toward Rockford, Illinois intercepting additional tornado warned storms.

SKYDRAMA.NET | The "Illinois warm front" lore runs deep in the storm chasing and meteorology community, but it's also prone to big busts. On Friday, April 3rd a warm front would be lifting north across central Illinois but forcing was rather nebulous and it wasn't terribly obvious when and where the potential for a tornadic supercell may be the highest. I drifted west from Champaign-Urbana and intercepted a pair of tornado warned supercells, one of which produced a tornado near the town of Hopedale, Illinois, though it spun up and appeared close to tornadogenesis many times! As always, head on over to skydrama.net for more and consider joining the channel as a supporting member for behind the scenes and pre-chase insights!

Chasing Tornadoes on the Illinois Warm Front | April 3, 2026 | Vlog #76
SKYDRAMA.NET | The 2026 storm observation season is off to quite a start in the Midwest! Back to back tornado days on April 2 and 3, the 2nd featuring fast-moving tornadic supercells from eastern Iowa into northern Illinois. I played the southern zone of the target and picked off a couple of tornado producing storms near Galesburg and Peoria, the most significant of which produced three tornadoes that all tracked very close to me near the small town of Laura, Illinois. Surrounded By Tornadoes at Laura, Illinois | April 2nd, 2026 | Vlog #75
SKYDRAMA.NET | I guess we'll call this a VLOG? I don't love chasing setup with tons of cold air crashing southward, but I'm also not going to say no to severe local storms given the alternative (not having storms). I had a pretty busy day scheduled and decided I didn't think my odds of seeing a tornado were any higher in neighboring Indiana and Ohio so I just hung around Champaign County chasing elevated supercells as they blew up, dropping tons of hail across the area. It was tough to get myself into one of the better hail cores until I was back at home watching the Illini game. More storms next week, stay tuned.

Chasing Hailstorms, Only To Get Hailed on at Home | March 27th, 2026 | Vlog #74
SKYDRAMA.NET | Extreme wind shear and tons of lift from a powerful upper level storm system compensated for marginal instability and led to a powerful QLCS, or a squall line with bowing segments with pockets of damaging winds and embedded circulations prompting tornado warnings. Not much of a chase, more like venturing out to cover a local severe weather event.

August 13th, 2007 Destructive Minnesota Thunderstorm
This is my entire storm chase from August 13th, 2007 digitally archived from MiniDV tape. We all do crazy things when we’re 20 years old, and on August 13th, 2007, when prospects for a Minnesota tornado began to fade, I parked myself directly in the path of a raging high-precipitation supercell loaded with hail and high winds just because… it felt like a fun thing to do that Monday evening. It was mid-August 2007, and the summer death ridge had set in across the Central U.S. - but atop the ridge, fast jet stream flow was leading to a period of stormy weather across the Upper Midwest. A moderate risk was in place across Minnesota on August 13th, and vacationing in Wisconsin at the time I figured I’d make the drive across the river and play in the volatile environment in place across the southern half of the state. By mid-evening it was clear the warm sector was capped and tornadic storms were unlikely across the chaseable southern half of the risk area, so I bolted north into the forest after the only storm in play - a powerful supercell thunderstorm storm that was nearly off the charts on the ole radar dial. Walking Around in Groundhog Day 2011 Blizzard in Chicago Area
This is footage that I recorded to MiniDV tape of the February 2011 Groundhog Day blizzard from DeKalb, IL where I was a student at Northern Illinois University. Summary from the National Weather Service office in Chicago, IL: Northern Illinois and northwest Indiana were walloped by one of the most powerful winter storms in history between January 31 and February 2, 2011. An initial period of light accumulating snow occurred from the evening of January 31st into the morning of February 1st, including lake effect snowfall over northeastern Illinois. The most memorable period of the storm occurred from the afternoon of February 1st through the early morning of February 2nd, when a powerful area of low pressure tracked slowly north. During this time, the snowstorm was accompanied by fierce winds, gusting to 50 to 60 mph, and even higher at times. The intense winds and heavy snow reduced visibility to near zero at times and produced widespread snowdrifts of 2 to 5 feet, and a few drifts of 10 feet or more. The storm was powerful enough to generate vigorous updrafts, resulting in lightning, thunder, and small hail. Over the three day period, snowfall totaled 21.2 inches officially at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, making it the third largest snowstorm on record for the city of Chicago.

JANUARY | Winter Storms + Work Travel | Vlog #24
After a busy end to the summer and fall, I've felt a bit rudderless this winter. We took a trip to Florida to visit Sophie's family, stepped in the Gulf of Mexico, and core punched a winter storm in Nashville. Back at home, work travel season ramped up and central Illinois finally got it's snowstorm. Dust Storm Warnings in Central Illinois | May 4th, 2026
SKYDRAMA.NET Strong southerly winds associated with an intense area of low pressure over the Great Lakes stirred up problems across central Illinois this afternoon. I speculate that near-surface winds may have been enhanced by outflow from dying storms across south-central Illinois, but nevertheless blustery winds and blowing dust were appropriately in the forecast early in the day from the National Weather Service forecast office in Central Illinois / Lincoln, IL. Dust storm warnings were issued early in the afternoon near Decatur - Lincoln, IL and then expanded to the east toward Champaign-Urbana, and north toward Bloomington-Normal. I had a loaded scheduled keeping me limited to a short radius around Champaign County and couldn't lay eyes on some of the bigger trouble spots reported across the area, but grabbed a little imagery from in and around Champaign-Urbana. I put SKYDRONE up from home near downtown Urbana and could make out the brown horizon and some plumes of blowing dust. I had about an hour of free time between 5-6 PM and snuck out west of Champaign-Urbana and encountered a couple of dense plumes of blowing dust as southerly winds howled.

Blowing Dust + ZERO VISIBILITY in Central Illinois | April 19th, 2023
High winds from a nearby collapsing thunderstorm and an intense area of low pressure kicked up tons of loose topsoil from freshly filled farm fields across Champaign County, Illinois during the evening of Wed, April 19th, 2023. This created brown out or zero visibility conditions at times making travel treacherous. // // Skydrama on social media: Twitter: @skydrama Instagram: @skydrama Web: Skydrama.Photography

NEW Storm Chasing Vehicle for 2025!
SKYDRAMA.NET | Just taking a moment in the quiet of January to humbly introduce to the channel the new 2025 Subaru Forester that will be my chariot for the incoming storm observation season, and hopefully many many more to come. This time of year always gets me a bit nostalgic for storm seasons of the past, so let's take a minute or 30 to talk about all the different cars I've driven up to thunderstorms over the last two decades of my life. What makes a good vehicle for you, for storm chasing or other?

Storm Chasing Off-Season | Winter Storm Mode in the Midwest | Vlog #57
SKYDRAMA.NET | On January 5th, 2025 a winter storm swept through the Plains and Ohio Valley with accumulating snow, freezing rain, and blizzard conditions in some locations. To the south, severe storms ripped through Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi with tornadoes and high winds. I put in a little weekend overtime covering the winter storm locally in Champaign-Urbana where we mostly underachieved with a few inches of powder and some blustery winds. We trudge ever closer to spring...

I Visited the Albion, IL Tornado Farm from June 2, 1990!
If you're a connoisseur of 90s tornado videos, you remember the video from Albion, Illinois and the June 2nd, 1990 tornado outbreak. On that date, an outbreak of violent tornadoes struck Illinois and Indiana, many of them photogenic and highly visible from a long distance. That led to a lot of great tornado videos shot by residents! One such video became famous world wide. It showed a tornado approaching in the distance on an Illinois farm, as the residents chatted about the approaching tornado in colorful fashion. The F4 tornado passes within a mile of the farm before disappearing into the distance. This video was huge in shaping my early childhood fascination in tornadoes and Midwest severe weather. While giving a talk on disruptive weather in Fairfield, IL just down the road from Albion, I got the surprise of a lifetime! // Video by Andrew Pritchard, Skydrama.Net Original June 2nd, 1990 tornado video filmed by Davida Lesner
