Beautiful Rime Ice / Freezing Fog Accretion in Southern Indiana

I made a trip down to southern Indiana to give a talk on Thursday morning, and it ended up being one of the most unexpectedly photogenic drives.

Checking weather conditions before leaving, I noticed a Freezing Fog Advisory in effect in my destination area and rolled my eyes a little. There was a chance that could be super slick and low visibility making for a pain in the butt drive, or there was a chance the arrival could be super photogenic with rime ice accretion on trees and surfaces. Luckily, it was the second.

There's something so... cold and dark about those cold and dark sunrises over the snowy fields of deep winter in the Midwest.

First light coming up over the snowy fields.

Then the sun fully came up and revealed thin layers of freezing fog, followed by full on dense freezing fog and really cool rime ice accretion in the Patoka - Princeton, Indiana area where I was presenting.

The event I was speaking at wrapped up around Noon, by which time the delicate rime ice accretions had melted and fallen off the tree branches, revealing the freezing rain accumulations from the winter storm earlier in the week.

This is my busy work travel time of the year, and it often means a lot of hours on the road during the cold dark of the morning/night but these wintry periods can do some beautiful things too!
