Heavy Rain & Strong Storms in the Ohio Valley, High-Impact Clipper Brings Snow, Damaging Winds to Upper Midwest

Today's Weather Summary:

Rain and thunderstorms will continue to move from west to east through the Ohio River Valley today. Corridors of heavy rainfall (1" to 2") and a strong storm or two are possible as a disorganized squall line continues through portions of Kentucky, Tennessee, and southern Ohio.

Attention turns to a particularly high-impact clipper system that will dive out of the Canadian Prairie and into the Upper Midwest tonight into tomorrow. The area of low pressure should move through eastern North Dakota tonight into Minnesota and southern Wisconsin by Thursday afternoon.

North of the area of low pressure a swath of 3" to 6" of snow is forecast to accumulate across portions of North Dakota, into much of Minnesota and Wisconsin. South of the surface low, very strong westerly winds will sweep across the Dakotas into much of Nebraska and western Iowa on Thursday, with wind gusts over 50 MPH possible.

Brain Dump:

Candidly, I think Thursday's storm system will be sneaky disruptive. High winds from the Dakotas into Nebraska and Iowa may cause power outages, tree damage, and travel disruptions. Winds won't be nearly as strong north of the low where snow is falling, but fairly efficient snowfall rates tonight into tomorrow may slow travel across North Dakota into Minnesota and Wisconsin.
